The radar used by the National Weather Service is called the WSR-88D, which stands for Weather Surveillance Radar - 1988 Doppler (the prototype radar was built in 1988). As its name suggests, the WSR-88D is a Doppler radar, meaning it can detect motions toward or away from the radar as well as the location of precipitation areas.
This ability to detect motion has greatly improved the meteorologist's ability to peer inside thunderstorms and determine if there is rotation in the cloud, often a precursor to the development of tornadoes.
There are 155 WSR-88D Doppler radar in the nation, including the U.S. Territory of Guam and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, operated by the National Weather Service and the Department of Defense.

These aren't smoothed PNG or GIF images, this is real Level 3 radar data rendered in its original radial format for a high level of detail.
Whether you are scanning reflectivity for a mesocyclone's tell-tale hook echo, trying to pinpoint the landfall of a hurricane's eye wall, or looking for small features like velocity couplets in the storm relative radial velocity product, only RadarScope gives you the power to view true radial NEXRAD weather radar on your iPhone or iPod touch.
When there are any Tornado Warnings (outlined in RED), Severe Thunderstorm Warnings (YELLOW polygons), or Flash Flood Warnings (GREEN polygons) in effect throughout the US, tap the warning button in the top right corner to browse the list of current warnings, view the details, and even zoom to the selected warning on the map.

OPERATOR'S MANUAL:
When you open the Wind Meter APP the screen will rotate so that the microphone end of the phone will now be on top. To obtain the best wind speed readings, simply hold the iphone upright and straight out to your side with the screen facing you, letting the wind slip over the top of the phone, and push Get Wind! Wait at least 5-10 seconds and then push Got Wind! The final reading is the average for the period. If for some reason the application appears to not work, push 'Get Wind' and blow or talk into the microphone end of the phone until the needle moves. The Wind Meter estimates wind speeds from 4-28 mph. We recommended that you test the Wind Meter for your particular iPhone or type of use, using only natural wind and a commercial grade anemometer for comparisons. Due to the necessary installation of a noise dampener, the Wind Meter is most effective in consistent winds. For the same reason, it begins to effectively estimate wind speeds that are above 5mph.
This application is not intended to replace commercial grade anemometers or scientific instrumentation.
Wind Meter supports multiple units of measure including Miles Per Hour, Knots, Kilometers Per Hour, Beaufort, Feet Per Second, and Meters Per Second.

Looking for a powerful, but simple to use radar app?
U.S. NEXRAD RADAR provides current radar images for more than 150 NEXRAD radar sites throughout the United States. In addition to the basic radar “reflectivity” images (typically seen on most weather sites and TV), this app shows doppler velocity and relative motion images. These additional images are used by weather experts to detect the movement of precipitation (such as rotation) during severe weather.

Q: Why won’t you make this app free?
A: It costs me (the developer) money to run the server for this App. That’s where it gets the data about the Airports in the US. Plus I will be constantly updating this app and all updates are FREE for the life of the app.
Q: Why isn't my local airport available?
A: Please realize that not all airports have METAR or TAF services. You can use the nearest airport feature to find airports with weather information.
Q: Do the sectional charts move like Google Maps?
A: Version 1.6 (available now) will allow you to pan and zoom sectional charts. Although you still can't use swiping and pinching...that will be available later (i'm still working on it).
Q: Where is [insert feature here]?
A: It's coming. I have a long list of feature requests, and I promise to get each one done. In the meantime, send me emails with your requests and I will add them to the list if its doable.
